So this is really happening…

David –

This is an idea that’s been floating in my head for a long time. When I met Lauren it was something I asked her at the very beginning.

“Will you travel the world with me?”

“Yes!”

Fast forward nearly 5 years and it’s happening! Earlier today I got off the phone with my supervisor who i’m working with on a project in Wellington NZ. I’d been covering his role for a month while he’d been away on annual leave. It probably wasn’t the handover he’d been expecting. It actually went down quite well and hopefully there will be something to come back to after our trip.

Meanwhile Lauren and I have got a big list of to-do’s on the fridge – 4 weeks before departure and there is a mountain of things to do (packing up our apartment, selling most of our things, organizing storage for the car, passports to renew, travel insurance, visas…the list goes on).

More specifically to the trip – the plan is quite light. We’ve booked flights to Bangkok and the first 4 nights of accommodation…after that we’re on our own. I’m sure we’ll make a post somewhere along the way about how we’ve managed to do some serious point hacking (and many a hours on hold to Qantas).

This photo was taken last year during a road trip from Melbourne to Sydney. We didn’t shower for quite a few days (only swimming in the sea) – something that may be repeated on this trip!

Lauren –

Not going to lie…i’m pretty nervous. I’ve never done anything like this in my life! I’ve traveled a lot, but it’s always been meticulously planned with at least some idea where we would be going and staying.

It is a bit scary leaving work for 6 months, I really love my job but I know it will be there for me when I get back. Canberra is really beautiful in Spring and Summer – i’m not particularly looking forward to coming back to Winter!

Canberra and its surrounds have so many amazing hikes. Definitely something to live up to!

But this is fun! I’m not sure I would have done it without David’s excitement and persuasion over the past nearly 5 years. There is a big difference between talking and dreaming about doing something to actually figuring out a plan to make it happen.

Our trip (we think) will go something like this: Southeast Asia for two months, Mexico and Cuba for a month, Colombia, Peru, Bolivia, Chile, Argentina, Brazil, Dubai, Perth.

I hope we will keep this blog updated with cool photos and funny stories along the way!
